“It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye!” So said several signs around Georgetown last week! When I saw them, I thought, “How did they know that I am in the process of saying goodbye?!” Turns out, it had nothing to do with me… and there were only four signs, two around each of two trees next … Continue reading Online Service – It Is So Hard to Say Goodbye
Who were the Transcendentalists? In what way were they troubling? Who was troubled by their presence in the mid-to-late 1800s? Who is troubled by them now? What do they have to do with Unitarian Universalism? Why do we — or should we — care about them as we approach the mid-twenty-first century? These are some … Continue reading Online Service – Those Troubling Transcendentalists
Go on… admit it! When referring to the faith tradition of your choice and/or to the place where you gather — virtually or not — to be with others who are also freethinkers, how often do you neglect to say the word Universalist when you mention, in whatever context, that you are a Unitarian Universalist?? … Continue reading Online Service – Our Better Half
I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this, but lately I often hear people saying, “Thank You So Much”, instead of just simply “Thanks!”. It doesn’t bother or irritate me, but I find it curious. I believe that our souls are incomplete throughout much of our lifetimes. I believe that the yearning … Continue reading Online Service – Soul Searching
Last week, I talked mostly about what it means to me personally to be a Unitarian Universalist. This week, I will continue to talk about the importance of giving generously during San Gabriel’s pledge drive (which is continuing through the month of October). This time I will be taking a much broader view. What does … Continue reading Online Service – Not the End of the Story
In almost every congregation that I have been a part of either as a lay person or professionally, the minister has been expected to do the “Money Sermon” during the pledge drive. This can potentially be awkward for a minister because they clearly have a personal stake in the outcome of the institution’s fundraising. I … Continue reading Online Service – Money Matters
One year ago, on Friday, October 4, 2019, in the middle of the afternoon, I drove into Georgetown, Texas, to start my interim ministry with you. In many ways, it is difficult to fathom that an entire year has gone by already! On the other hand, it often seems to me that I have been … Continue reading Online Service – Happy Anniversary
You have probably heard of the term “Paying It Forward”, “it” being kindness, a good deed, an investment in the future, a brief relationship-building gesture aimed at a stranger. The classic example is paying the toll for the driver behind you on a toll road, someone you have never met and most likely will never … Continue reading Online Service – Paying It Backward
