What is a soul? All through this political season, I have heard people from both sides saying that this election is “a battle for the soul of the nation”. How do we know when our souls are healthy? I believe that our souls are incomplete throughout much of our lifetimes. I believe that the yearning all humans have for a deeper connection to and experience of life relates to our soul’s need for meaning and our search for pieces of our soul that we have lost. How does that relate to this election? In my reflections this week, I will use a Buddhist koan to further confuse the issue — because a koan does not give us answers. The point of a koan is to leave us with more questions than answers….Where have you heard that before? Yes! That is a part of our Unitarian Universalist tradition — we are often proud of the fact that our faith tradition is more about questions than answers.
