Looking at that title, you may think that I have my holidays mixed up! I do know that this coming Saturday is the Fourth of July, not New Year’s Day. I have not “celebrated” the Fourth of July for many years; I can barely bring myself to acknowledge it. However, every day is the beginning of a new year, another chance for us to pay attention to how we live our lives and to what is really happening in the world. I have occasionally used the new year as a subject at various times of the year, most often during the Jewish High Holidays when the Jewish New Year is celebrated. I have not connected the new year theme to the Fourth of July before. It is a new year for the Unitarian Universalist Association and for many of its member congregations, including ours, as the fiscal year changes and new boards are installed. It is important to show up and do the work of the world, no matter how weary we currently are or what day of the year it is. How does sustainability fit in here? What do I mean by that word in the current context of world upheaval? Showing up might help ensure that humanity will be able to sustain this unique moment in history. I hope that you will join me this week as I explore these ideas.
