On April 4th, 1972 , four years after the assassination of Dr. King , I wrote, produced and directed a Masque in memoriam to him titled “Death of a King”. It was replete with music, dance, symbology and pageantry and a great success. The one thing I remember most in retrospect however is that it contained none of his words. This weekend, many will be celebrating the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King in many ways honoring him with marches and music and memories but as I worked on this Service I felt the need for his voice to be heard – a voice which not only lifted me up but also would never let me fall down – which gave me courage when I was frightened – provided Light in my moments of Darkness – which gave me Hope when Hope seemed nowhere to be found – which promised me Justice when I thought that there was no Justice for me and most importantly – a voice which always spoke with Love, of Love and to Love.
And so I ask you on this day to join me and listen as we both meditate upon what he had to say and continue his work as we move forward together on the side of Love. – Spoon
