We are invited to reflect on our culture’s beliefs and attitudes about work as as we prepare to recognize our National Labor Day. While America has long valued a strong work ethic, many of us struggle to keep our identity and our estimates of personal worth separate from our vocations, our jobs, and what we earn. The first UU Principle of the inherent worth and dignity of each person will serve as a better guide for appreciating the relationship between our labors and our worth as individuals in an economic system that often values productivity more than people.
