Homework for "Magical Negroes Sunday" with "Spoon" & Eric

Writer's picture: Admin SGUUFAdmin SGUUF

Homework for this Sunday:

1. Watch The American Society of Magical Negroes. If you'd prefer, you can stay after church and watch the movie in community after the service around noon. It is rated PG-13, to figure out if it is appropriate for everyone in your family you can check out Common Sense Media. You may notice that the critical review of the movie has been... critical. Mr. Spoon & I disagree with the critics on this one, and that's okay.

2. Watch this introduction to and video of Lift Every Voice & Sing - it will prepare you for the proper spirit and singing of the song.

3. If you'd like to know about the origins of the Magical Negro concept, you can read this article about Spike Lee's 2001 college tour where the term was first coined and popularized.

See you Sunday!
