This GWMN project is called Habitat at San Gabriel Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Our vision is to use our campus to create a wildlife habitat that provides smaller wildlife with food, water, cover and a place to raise their young. It is certified by the National Wildlife Federation.
Our local area is losing habitat at an incredible rate, and this loss of habitat is a major reason for loss of species all over the U.S. We follow naturalists E.O. Wilson and Dr. Douglass Tallamy, who advises that our plots of land, large or small, must be the new wilderness that provides for species.
Since 2015, we have planted over fifty species of only Texas natives. We follow sustainable practices, such as no pesticides or insecticides; the Xerces Society’s Leave the Leaves program, leaving dead plant material standing during winter for habitat of insects; making our own compost and purchasing plants from the Native Plant Society of Texas, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center or local nurseries.
