“Good grief” is a commonly used phrase. But where did it come from? And can grief be good? During this dark time in human history, grief is widespread. Grief is many-layered. The process of grieving is often ignored or not given its just due. Grieving for what we have lost during the past three months is just one facet of the kind of grief a worldwide crisis causes. The kind of grief that is happening now affects everyone — whether or not they acknowledge it. And the kind of grief that seems to be going hand-in-hand with the virus and our economic woes isn’t only about those two life-threatening challenges. Today’s grief is also a culmination of every past grief humankind has already been through. How can we use grief to build community during these times, rather than have it add to the chaos all around us?
