We don’t get too many second chances, especially if we have messed up royally the first time around. Once upon a time in a land far away…in the late 1960s, in Cleveland, Ohio, our very own Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) tried to do the right thing in the heat of the civil rights struggle of that era. Mistakes were made. Relationships were broken. Goodwill was badly wounded. How and why did this happen? In the spring of 2017, the UUA and its member congregations embarked on a second chance, another attempt to combat racism within our organization; we are very much in the middle of this work of trying to truly confront and understand racism and white supremacy. Will we get it right this time? Or do we still have too much to learn? I may say some things this morning that you would rather not hear, but I believe that you are ready to listen.
